North West indoor Games
Kids serve up a storm at Northwest Games!
A brilliant initiative organised by Bernie O’Callaghan as a way to drawing down the curtain on 2017 saw Cranford Athletes take to the AIT Arena to blow off some Christmas cobwebs with over 400 hundred competitors and 34 clubs taking part. The day got off to a cracker with Caolan Mc Fadden claiming bronze in the u12 boys long Jump, Aidan McFadden and Oisin Mc Nulty both had good jumps in this event also. On the outer track Caolan ran the 600m which was 3 laps of this track and Caolan led from the gun taking home the Gold medal, his team mates Aidan and Oisin both had fine performances picking lads off right to the end. Well done boys.
Our U12 Girls were made up of Miah Fletcher, Blathnaid Gallagher, Clodagh Neely, Aine and Miabh O Connell, these girls all ran in the 600m and all put in good personal performances. Blathnaid and Clodagh both competed in the sprint and shot coming 5th and 6th in the shot.
Back at the field events where Teresa Mullen was competing in the Girls U14 long jump, Teresa hit the board spot on every time improving her distance and getting a well deserved gold medal.
Also in very good form was Aoife Giles who kept her best throw in the shot to last and won the shot with a throw of 11m 55 cm. Orla Neely also competed in the shot and finished up in 6th place.
Orla had a good run in the 800m finishing well up the field.
Onto the 400m and the kids were treated to a brilliant world indoor standard by Wexford based athlete Phil Healy.
Allan Neely our only U 16 boy put in a good performance in the 1500m and competed in the Shot where he narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in 4th place.
Onto the relays – the Girls u12 were up first with Miah, Blathnaid, Miabh and Aine all running very well coming home in 5th. Boys were up next with Aidan, Caolan, Diarmuid and Oisin the boys got off to a great start and fought to the very end coming home in 6th. The girls U14 was the last event for us on which was a very long day with Nazara, Teresa, Clodagh and Orla and what a exciting race, all girls ran exceptionally well over the 200m x 4 race with a very exciting last leg with Orla holding on to third place and getting a well deserved bronze medal.
Well done girls.
So a brilliant day in Athlone and thanks a million to the parents that travelled down and helped out with all the kids throughout the day. Thanks to coaches Eamon Giles and Joe Boyce, Ernie McElhinney, Bridie Trearty and Rose Gavaghan. Happy New Year to All.
