Cranford AC

Eight Cranford athletes made the trip to St Catherine AC in Cork last weekend to compete in the Uneven Ages National Cross Country championships.  It was a bright and dry day that welcomed us to the well laid out course in the Cork countryside.

Cranfords Under 11 boys were the first to test out this challenging course, six boys lined up together to compete over this 1500m course and a large field of athletes.  All our boys ran an excellent personal race and put in a fine team performance.  Matthew Giles was first home for this team followed by Roan Ladley, Charlie Rogers, Oisin McHugh, Ben McGee and Faolan Caldwell.  We were extremely proud of this young team who were placed 10th in Ireland, many competing in their first All Ireland championships.

We had Miah Fletcher and Caolan McFadden both competing in the U 17 events.  Miah had to run 4 k through the mud and water to make this a true cross country event, Miah enjoyed her race and finished well up the field today and an improvement on her performance two weeks ago in Downings.

Caolan McFadden again treated us to another exciting days racing, where Caolan ran confidently out of his age around three laps of this challenging heavy mud and made it look so effortless.  Caolan held his own with the lead pack throughout his 5k event and fought hard with a strong finish to earn himself a bronze national medal.  This also qualifies Caolan to compete at the International event in Scotland Jan 2023.

The club would like to thank all those who travelled to support the athletes at todays event.  We would also like to thank our dedicated coaches who attend training each evening to ensure our athletes become the best they can be.  This marks the end of our national cross country season and we look forward to the track season and the variety of disciplines.  Remember your child might be future shot putter, long jumper or sprinter. Why not give them a chance to try out some track and field events, Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6.30pm at Rosapenna Training Ground.

Christmas hamper draw will be held on Saturday 17th December  in the Beach Hotel Downing’s, you can buy lines on Friday or Saturday morning outside Boyce’s Carrigart or of any club member, your support is appreciated.
