Cranford Ac get season off to a great start in Carndonagh

Sunday saw the start of the Cross Country season in Carndonagh where the wet and windy conditions didn’t put off the big crowd of athletes that braved the elements to compete in the first of the Donegal Championships hosted by Inishowen AC.

First up for Cranford AC was Bridie Trearty in the Masters race. Bridie had a great run over the 3500 course and stayed with the lead pack throughout to claim a Bronze medal in what was a very fast competitive race.

Our juvenile athletes then took to the field to compete in the u8 races. The girls were up first and for most of these young athletes this was the first time they had ever competed and compete they did. Tara McGarvey led the girls home in 3rd place to win a Bronze medal followed closely by Orla Cunningham in 5th and Annie McNulty in 12th. In the boys race Jerry Coyle made his debut appearance for Cranford and having led from the gun looked very comfortable over the 600m course to claim Cranford’s first Gold of the day. A great performance from these young athletes and ones to look out for in the future.

Next up were the U10 girls where Lucie McGarvey had a great race to come home in 4th place followed by Karen Neely and Emma McGee who both put in good performances. Michael Moore led the u10 Boys home in an impressive 6th place with Killian Caldwell and Diarmuid Gallagher bouth running well.

Miah Fletcher had a brilliant run in the u12 girls race where she stayed with the lead pack throughout before making a break for the line with about 100m to go to claim the Gold medal. Clodagh Neely finished strongly in 16th place with Blaithnaid Gallagher also running very well to finish in 24th position followed closely by Cranford’s new recruits Aine O’Connell, Meabh O’Connell and Mevagh McBride who all finished strongly.

The u12 boys were up next and Caolan McFadden had a superb race where he got off to a great start and had a battle to the line with Boyd Russell of Olympian AC to win the Gold Medal. Caolan Curran also had a great run to finish in 17th place followed closely by Eoin Friel in 20th, Aidan McFadden in 22nd, Oisin McNulty in 26th and Ryan McMenamin in 34th. A great performance from these young lads where they also claimed team Bronze.

The u14 girls all ran very well today with Caitlin O’Hara putting in an excellent performance leading the girls home in 11th place followed closely by Sophie Curran in 19th, Nazara McFadden in 25th, Orla Neely in 34th and it was great to see Caoimhe Brown back after having to miss most of last year due to sickness putting in a real gutsy performance to come home in 40th position. The girls were well rewarded for their efforts when they won Team Bronze.

Pride of place must go to our u14 boys this week where the talented Oisin Kelly had to dig deep throughout the 2500m race and after a brilliant finish, where he broke away from the other athletes, claimed the Gold medal with Oran McMenamin also looking very strong winning Bronze and with Cian McMenamin in 11th and Johnny Trearty in 22nd this secured these boys the Team Gold.

Our u16s finished the day off well with Molly Trearty competing in a combined u16/u18 Girls race had a good run to finish in a respectable 5th place. Eoin Moore also had a good run to come home in 15th with Allan Neely finishing strongly in 21st position.

Thanks to the Coaches, Eamon Giles, Joe Boyce, Ernie McElhinney, Rose Gavaghan and Bridie Trearty and to the parents who came along to support all the Athletes. Next up is the Uneven age Donegal Championships in Finn Valley at the weekend and we look forward to seeing some more great performances.
