Great start to Cross Country Season for Cranford AC

On what was a beautiful sunny day the Cross Country season got underway in Stranolar for the first of the Donegal Cross Country Championships.

First up and showing the younger athletes how it’s done was the legend that is Bridie Trearty running in the Masters race. Bridie had an outstanding race and came home in a very impressive 6th place overall and 1st in her age category.

It was then the turn of the juveniles with the u8’s races and it was great to see so many young athletes take to the field. Cranford AC had three of our youngest athletes taking part with Karen Neely and new member Orla Cunningham coming home with medals in the girls race and Killian Caldwell in the boys race.

Next up were the u10 girls and what a race it was. Miah Fletcher was the stand out athlete when she took off with about 500 metres to go and raced home to comfortably win the race and Cranfords first gold of the day. Lucy McGarvey running her first race in the Cranford vest had a great run to come home in a very impressive 13th place.

In the u10 boys race there was another gold for Cranford after Caolan McFadden got off to a great start and led the race from start to finish. He was closely followed by Ryan McMenamim in 10th, Michael Moore in 14th, Ronan Cunningham running his first race for Cranford had a great run and came home in 43rd place and Diarmuid Gallagher in 48th place. This great performance earned our young boys a well deserved bronze team medal.

We had a good representation in the u12 girls race with Clodagh Neely having a great race, she led the girls home in 10th place. She was closely followed by Teresa Mullen in 16th, Nazara McFadden, Orla Neely, Caoimhe Neely, Ciara Donnelly and Blaithnaid Gallagher.

There was another gold medal in the u12 boys race when Max Roarty took off from the gun and had an impressive race to claim the gold medal. Cian McMenamin ran very well to come home in 10th place and Conor Neely in 16th. Unfortunately we were missing a couple of members of this team with Aidan McFadden recovering from a recent operation and the club would like to wish him a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back at training soon.

Caitlin O’Hara was our only girl in the U14 girls race and with Caitlin able to run in this age group again next year had a great race to come home well up the field in 23rd place.

In the u14 boys race Oisin Kelly proved he’s one to watch again this year and having kept with the lead pack throughout the race, with 1k to go he took off and came home well ahead of the other runners to claim another gold for himself and Cranfords 4th gold of the day. Liam Donnelly also looked very impressive coming home in 7th place followed closely by Allan Neely in 19th, Oran McMenanim in 22nd and Johnny Trearty in 28th earning these boys a silver team medal.

In the u16 girls Molly Trearty had a good strong run in a highly competitive race and came home in an impressive 6th place with Hannah Logue running well coming home in 20th place.

Our 5th and final gold of the day went to Johnny McGroddy in the u16 boys race where Johnny led from the start. Great to see Johnny back running cross country after missing out last year due to an injury. Eoin Logue had a great run and came home in 14th place closely followed by Eoghan Moore in 20th place.

The last race of the day was the u18 boys race where Kevin Logue looked very impressive and just missed out on a medal coming home in 4th position.

Well done to all our athletes and a big thank you to the coaches Eamon Giles, Ernie McElhinney, Joe Boyce, Rose Gavaghan and Bridie Trearty for all their hard work in getting our athletes prepared for the season ahead and to the parents for all their support on the day.
