Donegal Gold for Cranford U14 Girls Team
The even ages Donegal Championships were held on Sunday last at St Davogs GAA club near Castlederg. This was a challenging cross country course over hills and rough ground which suited the Cranford athletes well.
Cranford turned out 29 enthusiastic athletes who travelled to the event and they did not disappoint.
Cranford U 8 boys ran 600m on this challenging course to finish well up in their field, this was the first run out for this Cranford team and the boys had a great first run out. First home in this team was Ben McGee in an epic 4th place, closely followed by Matthew Giles in 6th place, Faolan Caldwell (13), Matthew McFadden (16), Rory Boyce (17)
The under 10 races were over 1000m with Sadie McGettigan making her debut outing for Cranford finished an excellent 7th place followed by Anna Giles, and Niamh McGeever who had an unfortunate incident loosing her spike although had been racing well, well done girls.
Five under 10 boys lined up next and all put in gutsy performances throughout this race, Ciaran Cooney was first home for this team in 11 place followed by Odhran McGroddy (20), Jerry Coyle (29), Oisin McBride (51) and Lorcan Boyce
Cliodhna McBride and Karen Neely were all warmed up and ready for their challenge over this now heavy going race track over 1500m in the under 12 age group, both girls put in fine performances finishing 5th and 47 respectively. The under 12 boys consisted of Killian Caldwell and Ethan Henderson who both proved competitive in this large field. A great race from these boys.
The under 14 girls had great potential and showed their winning form doing the club proud coming home with gold medals what an exciting race this was to watch. All the girls ran strongly showing that commitment and training pay off. Miah fletcher went out strongly and sat in 2nd place throughout, Clodagh Neely had an excellent race coming storming home in 5th closely followed by Jessica Cullen who again had a fabulous race. Ellie McFadden was 4th counter on this gold medal team finishing 15th. Amy Cullen and Blathnaid Gallagher Completed this team performance again great running by these girls.
In the under 14 boys Caolan McFadden challenged throughout this race to become Donegal champion and Eoin Friel also had a great race finishing strongly in 11th place.
Orla Neely had tough conditions as the day became warmer and the going heavy along this 3k course, Orla held her pace and finished a respectable 20th place in the under 16 girls.
Last up to run over this 3500m track today were Oisin Kelly and Oran Mc Menamin both boys ran a great race finishing 3rd and 8th.
Great day out for these athletes well done to everyone.
