Boxing day this year saw over 30 families arrive on a bright and sunny morning in Cranford Park to race in both the Juniors and Seniors competitions, The seniors racing for the coveted Bill Hunter Cup and the Ladies for the Winifred Gallagher Memorial trophy.
The Cranford course was in pristine condition for the day with the undulating course well marked out and ready for the first race of the day.
Eleven enthusiastic Under 10 runners were well placed on the course for a challenging race, local athletes and visitors were all in enthusiastic form after a group warm up with coaches Eamon Giles and Claire Neely. The race was planned according to age and relevant distance, each of these young athletes produced fine personal performances. Prizes were provided for all who raced and huge congratulations to all who took part.
Another eleven under 14 club athletes were there to challenge each other over various distances, this race was closely fought by all these runners. Gutsy performances on the final hill at Cranford decided on the final positions and again all competitors received a prize for competing.
The Seniors race saw over 25 entrants ready to race over the beautiful course on the coastal path at Mulroy Bay, beautiful scenery and fabulous winter weather contributed to an enjoyable race for all competitors. These runners raced over the 5k course with determination and plenty of team spirit with lots of encouragement from family and friends. John McFadden put in a fine performance to lead the competitors home in 18.18 mins, first lady home was Paula Hegarty in a respectable 26.57mins. Johnny McGroddy Ran a great race keeping up with the seniors to claim the title of Junior Men in a time of 19.11
Prize giving followed in the Beach Hotel Downings where all competitors were provided much appreciated food and refreshments. A lovely way to spend the day with family and friends, thank you to all who supported this event.
